Kyle Gallagher

I make paintings, drawings, and mixed media pieces that reference a personal archive of shapes and symbols that come from a method of abstracting letters of the alphabet. Shapes repeat and reappear, surfacing as abstractions that can be infinitely rearranged and layered, playing with the viewer’s sense of positive and negative space. Through a process of layering, I juxtapose different applications of paint to create an ambiguity between two dimensional and three dimensional space. My work could be described as organic, aquatic, or spooky, but it avoids being pared down to one specific meaning. I am influenced from a variety of different things such as graffiti, copy-paste digital culture, and cartoons. Although I am interested in capturing the quick and gestural energy of graffiti and cartoons, there is a meticulous process of preliminary sketches, digital paintings, and layering of materials that come before the final work.
